'THE SHOOTOUT'
After a 2 year hiatus, the St Ives Surf School Shootout finally returns.
A charity surfing competition where teams of four battle it out amongst the waves on softboards, adorned in the most extravagant and creative fancy dress that they can muster.
This year we will be raising money for 'Surfers Against Sewage' (https://www.sas.org.uk/) and local Community Sponsorship group 'Penwith Welcomes Refugees' (https://penwithwelcomesrefugees.org/)
Its (almost!) anything goes attitude attracts a diverse and entertaining group of participants stretching from bona fide British surfing icons to precariously balanced average Joe’s that can barely stand up on dry land!
You might ask why the Average Joe would subject themselves to the inevitable humiliation?
That’s because actually being able to surf is only one way of scoring points. Waves can be surfed properly or to comedic effect with both being given equal weight by the judges. This levels the playing field and means that National Surfing champions can be knocked out by somebody who started surfing a couple of weeks ago.
Equally important (and contributing to each teams score) is the fancy dress with most teams putting lot of time and effort into their attire. Indeed, the best fancy dress title is regarded by most as more prestigious than the actually winning the surf competition itself!
